Lord Charnwood, whose full name was Godfrey Rathbone Benson, was a British author, academic, Liberal politician, and philanthropist. He was born in Alresford, Hampshire, in 1864 and died in 1945. Charnwood is best known for his biography of Abraham Lincoln, which has been highly regarded for its insightful portrayal of Lincoln's intellectual brilliance and character.
He was also involved in politics, serving as a Member of Parliament for Woodstock from 1892 to 1895, and later as the Mayor of Lichfield from 1909 to 1911. In 1911, he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Charnwood, of Castle Donington in the County of Leiceste
